Eight councillors quit in protest: Non-availability of funds

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, March 23: Eight councillors of Union Council No 53, Farid Town, on Friday tendered their resignations in protest against non-constitution of monitoring sub-committees and denial of funds for development schemes by the UC nazim.

Reports said the union council members had been demanding for well over a year that nazim Tayyabur Rehman should constitute the monitoring sub-committees to ensure the implementation of the government’s policy on various development projects. The nazim, however, turned a deaf ear to their pleas.

Alleging that the UC nazim always took arbitrary decisions, the councillors tendered their resignations to City District Nazim Fayyaz Ahmad Chattha. The councillors are: Muqarab Ahmad, Muhammad Boota, Muhammad Rafiq, Munawar Khan Afridi, Rifaqat Ghauri, Shafiq, Shakeel Ahmad and Rubina Kausar.

The district nazim has sent for the union council nazim and councillors at his office on Monday.

EXHIBITION: Indian High Commissioner Sita Paal on Friday visited the industrial exhibition at the Gulshan Iqbal Park and appreciated the quality of products.

Mr Paal said these products could compete in the international markets and suggested that such an exhibition should be held in other big cities as well to promote the national industry.

Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmad also visited the exhibition, organised by the Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and told the traders that he could provide them a special train for transporting these products to ports and other cities.

FINED: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 fined Rs50,000 each to two guarantors for not producing an accused involved in the murder case of five people.

The court also ordered to auction the properties of both guarantors, Sumander Khan and Munir Ahmad.

Accused Nazer Muhammad of Bandiana (Sialkot), involved in the killing of five people, was on bail. The court summoned him time and again, but he failed to turn up.
