Heavy rain, snowfall in N. Areas

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, March 18: The Northern Areas have been receiving heavy rain and snowfall for the past two days, disrupting civic life and business activities.

Intense cold gripped areas, including Astore, Yasin, Gojal, Gupis, Baltistan, Hunza, Nagar and Phander while landslides and heavy snow disrupted traffic on the Karakoram Highway in the Kohistan district of the NWFP. Flights between Gilgit, Skardu and Islamabad had been suspended for the past three days.

Food and fuel shortage was reported from several areas because of extended road closures. Farmers in hilly areas said that the weather had delayed the sowing season.
