Pakistan team donates $10,000 to mosque

KINGSTON, March 17: The Pakistan cricket team on Friday donated US$ 10,000 for the repair and refurbishment of a local mosque and the Islamic Centre located near the Sabina Park.

The team and its officials – except Bob Woolmer and Danish Kaneria -offered Friday prayers at the jam-packed mosque which has a capacity of around 150 persons.

Imam of the mosque Shaikh Musa Tejani, who did a short stint at Islamabad’s Faisal Mosque a few decades ago, offered special sermon and welcomed the Pakistan contingent to the premises.

Jamaica, which has around 3000 Muslims in various parts of the country, has 12 mosques in the region.

The mosque and Islamic centre were badly damaged during a hurricane in Kingston three years ago. The money was handed over to a Pakistani named Tariq Malik, who is also the member of the Islamic Centre and the Mosque Committee.

The centre also offers Islamic teachings and Quranic education to the children under the supervision of Ms Maroofa Tejani, wife of Imam Musa.

Meanwhile, Pervez Mir, the Pakistan media manager, hosted a reception on Friday for Pakistan, India, Irish and other media personnel covering the World Cup matches at local hotel.—APP
