Pen-sketches of Dutch squad
BRIDGETOWN, March 15: Pen-pix of the Netherlands’ World Cup squad: Luuk van Troost (LHB/LM/captain). Age: 37. ODI appearances: 21. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Colombo, Sept 16, 2002. The captain leads from the front. He is a clean striker of the ball and his left-arm seam bowling lends variety to the attack.
Career: 278 runs (ave 17.37), HS 40, 5 catches, 3 wkts (ave 73.66), BB 2-29.
Baas Zuiderent (RHB). Age: 29. ODI appearances: 26. Debut: v New Zealand, Baroda, Feb 17, 1996. The leading Dutch batsman since the country went to the 1996 World Cup in the Indian sub-continent. Has also played for Sussex with distinction.
Career: 495 runs (ave 21.52), HS 77, 4 50s, 16 catches.
Adeel Raja (RHB/OB). Age: 26. ODI appearances: 7. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Colombo, Sept 16, 2002. The Pakistani-born is a useful off-spin bowler.
Career: 11 runs (ave 2.75), HS 5, 1 catch, 9 wkts (ave 29.44), BB 4-42, 4w 1.
Peter Borren (RHB/RM). Age: 23. ODI appearances: 10. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Amstelveen, July 4, 2006. The former New Zealand under-19 player joined the Dutch team in 2006. One of the key bowlers in the Dutch attack.
Career: 93 runs (ave 11.62), HS 34, 5 catches, 11 wkts (ave 34.00), BB 3-54.
Tim de Leede (RHB/RM). Age: 39. ODI appearances: 26. Debut: v New Zealand, Baroda, Feb 17, 1996. The all-rounder will be one of the oldest players at the World Cup, his third after 1996 and 2003. The former Dutch captain has also played for second elevens of three English counties.
Career: 365 runs (ave 16.59), HS 58, 2 50s, 6 catches, 26 wkts (ave 34.11), BB 4-35, 4w 1.
Mark Jonkman (RHB/RFM). Age: 20. ODI appearances: 4. Debut: v Canada, Potchefstroom, Nov 26, 2006. The new ball bowler has modelled himself on Australian Brett Lee, but will remain a back up bowler at the World Cup. Expected to be the future star of Dutch cricket.
Career: 31 runs (ave 31.00), HS 15, 5 wkts (ave 22.60), BB 2-28.
Alexei Kervezee (RHB/RM). Age: 17. ODI appearances: 10. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Amstelveen, July 4, 2006. The Namibian-born player has shown enough promise to be signed up by Worcestershire for the next two years.
Career: 156 runs (ave 22.28), HS 49, 4 catches.
Mohammad Kashif (RHB/SLA). Age: 22. ODI appearances: 6. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Amstelveen, July 4, 2006. The Pakistan-born left-arm spinner has the talent to go far.
Career: 1 run (ave 0.50), 1 catch, 6 wkts (ave 37.33), BB 3-42.
Darron Reekers (RHB/RM). Age: 33. ODI appearances: 9. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Amstelveen, July 4, 2006. A hard-hitting all-rounder in the Andrew Flintoff mould, he chose to play for the Netherlands instead of his native New Zealand.
Career: 305 runs (ave 33.88), HS 104, 1 100, 4 catches, 12 wkts (ave 23.58), BB 3-54.
Edgar Schiferli (RHB/RMF). Age: 30. ODI appearances: 13. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Colombo, Sept 16, 2002. Finally gets a chance to play in the World Cup after narrowly missing selection in 1996. Lively fast bowler with a good temperament.
Career: 93 runs (ave 9.30), HS 22, 1 catch, 8 wkts (ave 60.25), BB 2-43.
Jeroen Smits (RHB/WK). Age: 34. ODI appearances: 19. Debut: v India, Paarl, Feb 12, 2003. The number one wicket-keeper for the Dutch after a long stint as understudy to Reinout Scholte. Hopes to contribute with the bat too.
Career: 93 runs (ave 18.60), HS 26, 19 dismissals (16 catches and 3 stumpings).
Billy Stelling (RHB/RFM). Age: 37. ODI appearances: 9. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Amstelveen, July 4, 2006. The South African-born has vast experience in his home country and England before settling for the Dutch in 1995.
Career: 159 runs (ave 39.75), HS 45, 5 catches, 15 wkts (ave 27.73), BB 3-41.
Eric Szwarczynski (RHB). Age: 24. ODI appearances: 4. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Amstelveen, July 6, 2006. Another South African-born player who is the team's opening batsman. Is working hard on his bowling skills so that he may get a chance to take a World Cup wicket.
Career: 107 runs (ave 35.66), HS 56, 1 50, 1 catch.
Ryan ten Doeschate (RHB/RFM). Age: 26. ODI appearances: 11. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Amstelveen, July 4, 2006. Yet another South African born player who has played for Essex after a stint with Western Province in Cape Town. A big hitter with a century to his credit in One-day Internationals, his fast-medium bowling will also count for the Dutch.
Career: 441 runs (ave 55.12), HS 109, 1 100, 2 50s, 4 catches, 20 wkts (ave 22.10), BB 4-31, 4w 2.
Dan van Bunge (RHB/LB). Age: 24. ODI appearances: 21. Debut: v Sri Lanka, Colombo, Sept 16, 2002. Has emerged from the age-group ranks and made 62 against eventual finalists India at the 2003 World Cup.
