KARACHI: Use of latest ultrasound techniques stressed

KARACHI, March 15: Importance of latest ultrasound techniques in diagnosing abdominal diseases was highlighted by Dr Seerat Aziz of the University of California, San Francisco, in his lecture at the Dow University of Health Sciences here on Thursday.
The lecture was organised by the Professional Development Centre at the Arag Auditorium.
Speaking at length about the latest ultrasound techniques and procedures, Dr Aziz said doctors must have adequate knowledge of the advancements in this field.
He observed that the knowledge would make it easier for them to take decisions in emergency and diagnose a disease promptly.
Through a presentation, Dr Aziz also shared case reports relating to abdomen, liver, pancreas and kidneys ailments.
The presentation was followed by a question-answer session. It was attended by a large number of medical students, including graduates and postgraduates.
Dr Qamar S. Khan, head of the Radiology Department of the Civil Hospital Karachi, said: “Almost 30,000 procedures of ultrasound are conducted only at the Radiology Department of the Civil Hospital in the metropolis annually.”
Speaking at the session, the senior radiologist said his department was well-equipped with CT-Scan and IVP facilities.
“The department will soon be getting an MRI machine,” Dr Khan disclosed.
The senior radiologist said a nominal service fee ranging from Rs60 to Rs180 was being charged for ultrasound, adding that the deserving people were charged no fee.
Dr Saleem Ilyas, Director of the Professional Development Centre offered vote of thanks and Dr Khalid Siddiqui delivered the welcome address.
