Lucky Leader powers his way to win at KRC

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, March 14: Fancied four-year-old bay colt, Lucky Leader, powered his way to claim the feature event in the Gymkhana race meeting at Karachi Racecourse on Wednesday.

Ridden by M. Yousuf, the public fancy horse posted a three-quarter-of-a-length victory over favourite mare Patricia as punters heaved a sigh of relief in the concluding event after they were hoodwinked by connections in the opening race.

Filly Foolish Pleasure finished three lengths behind to secure third place while chestnut Killer Instincts completed the frame by finishing further eight lengths away.

The field was reduced to 17 following last minute withdrawl of mare Lady Umpire.

Joint favourite three-year-old bay filly, Sweetie Pie, made amends when she galloped to two-and-a-half lengths victory over mare Princess Rozi to land supporting event.

The filly from the stables of Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara, was sprinted home by Zaki Zakir and saddled by Allah Judrio.

With a win and a second in the last two outings under his belt, the running of 10-year-old chestnut Thanks Naeem left much to be desired. He failed to appear even on the board.

As predicted, three-year-old bay filly, Be Jamalo, lived up to her top billing when she posted a facile seven lengths victory over The Choice Of The Day.

The triumph earned rider Fahim K a fine double his earlier winner being Raaz in the second race. Owned by Ms Beenish Hasan, Be Jamalo was installed favourite in re-betting after withdrawl of earlier joint favourite Lucky Gem before the start of race.

Azam The Great was another favourite who atoned to previous loss by registering a four lengths victory over Sher-e-Awan.

Public fancy bay horse Burnish Pride claimed a long overdue victory after a layoff when he beat mare Gule-Lala by two lengths.

Raaz, a 10-year-old bay horse, who was among those who also ran in the last outing, gave a surprise when he edged out Welcome Pachino by four lengths to win the second race. Earlier, Raaz had claimed honours on Feb 25. Mare Lucky Girl was installed favourite in the race but for unknown reason she was not allowed to run on merit.

Seven-year-old chestnut, Lucky View, land the opener by beating filly Gul Bano by four-and-a-half lengths.

Earlier, the modus operandi drew severe criticism from the public following change of rider of Lucky View by the connections at the eleventh hour thus depriving them of their money. The horse was neglected by punters when the betting opened in view of a novice rider Hameed H.K on board. However, when the rates soured up, the connections start backing making it a joint favourite finally replacing the weak rider with experienced Sohail Ahmed.

The race-goers are of the opinion that if needed, riders be changed before the odds open in the ring so that they may not be hoodwinked.

The next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on Sunday.
