RAWALPINDI, March 14: Opposition members in the District Council at a meeting here on Wednesday condemned the presidential reference filed against Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and termed it unconstitutional.
The meeting saw mixed reaction to the reference as government benches supported the presidential action. Pandemonium marred the proceedings and the session was adjourned after resolutions regarding development projects were passed.
The council started its proceedings chaired by convener and naib nazim Muhammad Afzal Khokhar. The opposition members on a point of order protested the presidential reference.
A condemnation resolution was also presented by the opposition members Anjum Farooq Paracha, Mian Imran Hayat, Colonel Abbasi and others. The convener urged the members not to discuss the presidential reference as the matter was being heard by the Supreme Judicial Council.
Later, different area representatives asked about the follow- up to the resolutions passed previously by the council. The convener assured the local representatives that approved resolutions would be implemented soon.
The convener forwarded the matter relating to the approval of education budget to the accounts committee after member Shaukat Bhatti questioned its approval without the consent of the council.—Online
