LAYYAH, March 14: The district bar association has cancelled the membership of nine lawyers and banned the district nazim’s entry to the barroom into the bargain.
The association took the decision at a meeting held here on Wednesday with bar president Sheikh Saifullah Saeed in the chair.
The meeting unanimously decided to cancel the membership of those lawyers who participated in the lawyers’ convention held by the Punjab government at Alhamra in Lahore. It also banned the entry of Layyah district nazim Malik Ghulam Haider Thind to the barroom.
The lawyers whose membership has been cancelled are Ahtesamul Eiman, Muhammad Yaseen Karlo, Naveedul Islam Sindho, Sheikh Javaid Akhter, Ghulam Ali, Qasim Bin Sajjad Tangwani, Muhammad Sibtain Khan, Abdul Aziz Buzdar and Miss Nuzhat Yasmeen.
The meeting also passed a resolution condemning mishandling of the apex court chief justice by the police. It also criticised the information minister for describing the conduct of the chief justice as a political stunt.
BAHAWALPUR: The local bar’s general body at a meeting held with president Yahyah Khan in the chair cancelled the membership of Malik Zafar Iqbal Awan, also a Punjab Bar Council member.
The bar took the action against Zafar Awan, also Punjab PPP president of the Sherpao group, for supporting the presidential reference at a press conference he addressed here on Tuesday.
Ceasing his membership unanimously through a resolution, the bar also urged the Punjab Bar Council to suspend his membership.
Members of the high court and district bar associations continued their protest on the third consecutive day on Wednesday and did not appear in courts.
OKARA: Dozens of lawyers of the Okara district bar association observed a token hunger strike in the district courts complex in front of the Quaid-i-Azam hall.
They chanted slogans against Gen Musharraf and demanded reinstatement of the chief justice. Later, the lawyers said `Azaan’ repeatedly under the leadership of DBA secretary-general Chaudhry Sagheer Ahmad Harni.
TOBA TEK SINGH: Lawyers continued their strike while DBA president Chaudhry Javed Aslam Kahloon vowed to extend it to Thursday as well.
The lawyers in Kamalia also boycotted the court proceedings.
PML-N district president Chaudhry Amjad Ali Javed, MMA district secretary-general Mian Abdul Basit and Jamiat Ahle Hadith central leader Allama Burq Toheedi also condemned misbehaviour of government agencies with the CJP.
MIANWALI: The boycott of lawyers continued as none of them appeared in courts.
DBA members held a condemnation meeting under the chairmanship of its president Malik Muhammad Rafique.
The bar president told the house that on Tuesday evening the DCO called him for a meeting and invited through him the local lawyers to participate in the lawyers’ convention organised by the ruling party in Lahore, but he refused.
MUZAFFARGARH: Members of the district bar association continued staying away from court proceedings and also held a hunger strike camp.
DBA President Zubaidul Islam Khan Sherwani and other senior lawyers participated in the hunger camp. They also criticised federal law minister Wasi Zafar for abusing a journalist in a radio talk show.
Since no lawyer appeared in courts, judges adjourned the cases. The bar announced a token strike on Thursday and a full day strike on Friday.
The DBA president announced that the bar would cancel membership of the lawyers who had attended the lawyers’ convention in Lahore.
GUJRANWALA: The district bar association continued boycotting of courts and held a hunger strike camp.
Speaking on the occasion, DBA president Ilyas Rehan, secretary-general Amir Munir Bagri, former bar president Pervaiz Oathi, former secretary-general Malik Sarwar and other senior lawyers criticised Wasi Zafar for abusing a senior journalist.
Scores of lawyers visited the hunger strike camp set up in front of the city district government nazim’s office.
The bar announced observing a complete strike on Saturday.
SAHIWAL: Lawyers announced that they would go on a hunger strike on Thursday (today) while no lawyers attended courts on the third consecutive day.
The DBA president said the boycott of courts would continue till the reinstatement of the chief justice.
SHEIKHUPURA: Ferozewala bar association president Abdul Qayyum Bhatti and secretary-general Shah Nawaz in a joint press conference slammed the police for implicating some 150 lawyers in fabricated cases.
They said the Ferozewala police registered cases against 32 nominated and 118 unidentified lawyers.
They threatened to besiege the Ferozewala police station if cases were not withdrawn against the lawyers.
