KARACHI: Smiles cost so little

KARACHI, March 14: It only requires a little to make a child smile, no matter what strata of the society he/she hails from. So was the case with three hundred underprivileged children, not more than 11 years of age, who came to have fun at the Nisar Shaheed Park like never before.

With excitement painted all over their faces, students of Manzil School, Zindagi Trust and A Caus, seemed pretty oblivious to who organised the programme and what for. But as the organisers-cum-supporters — British Council– put it, that’s what it was all about — letting them enjoy themselves.

The event, Dream Teams, was supposed to take place on March 12 and was postponed to March 14 as there was rain forecast. Being organised for the second time, the entire programme was orchestrated by a group of students (from DHA School and St Michael’s School) who had participated in a workshop conducted by Professor Abbas aimed at developing leadership qualities and intercultural awareness in them.

As soon as the students got there, a talent show was held in which the students exhibited their singing and acting skills. The icing on the cake was the access to free joyrides which the children enjoyed the most. A magic show that followed had all the kids glued to their seats for as long as it lasted.

The responsibilities were nicely divided among the volunteers and they took good care of the children.

The chief guest of the event was retired Justice Abdul Razzak Thaheem, federal minister of local government and rural development.

He distributed gifts among children and wished that events like these were held more frequently. All the kids were full of joy and excitement when they got gifts from the organizers at the end of the programme.— Meera Jamal
