KARACHI: Demo staged against CJP’s suspension

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, March 13: The Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party on Tuesday condemning the government for suspension of the chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry demanded his immediate reinstatement.

PMAP leaders Hakeem Khan Mandokhel, Nazeer Jan, Sabereen Khan, Abdul Ali, Janan Khan and others were speaking at a demonstration at the Press Club held to protest against the suspension of the chief justice.

Holding placards and banners inscribed with their demands, the protesters chanted slogans against the injustice.

They demanded that army rulers and the present government that had come into power through the back door be sacked and an interim government, comprising the judges who had not taken oath under the PCO, be formed which should hold elections for the constituent assembly within 90 days so that a constitution guaranteeing rights of all the people could be prepared.

The leaders said constitution had been violated numerous times by the generals and whatever little democracy left was uprooted by the army rulers.

They said action against the chief justice had been taken as he was questioning the government on human rights violations which was causing embarrassment to the rulers.

Criticising the government, they said the chief justice was reportedly threatened in the army house and forced to resign but he refused.

Besides, they said the chief justice’s insistence that his trail be held in an open court also suggested that he had not committed any crime.

They urged all the civil society groups and political parties and the masses to join hands to launch a movement against the injustice done to the chief justice of Pakistan.

They also criticised the police for resorting to baton charge the lawyers and other members of the civil society who were protesting against the suspension of chief justice.
