Support pledged to lawyers

LAHORE, March 12: The Labour Party Pakistan (LPP) will stage a demonstration outside the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday (today) to condemn police excesses against the lawyers protesting against victimisation of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry by the government.

A decision to this effect was taken at a party meeting held here on Monday with Yousaf Baloch in the chair.

Secretary general Farooq Tariq said there was no justification for the police attack on the lawyers protesting against the unlawful suspension of the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

He said representatives of trade unions and civil society organisations would protest against the police highhandedness.

PU students: Punjab University students staged a protest demonstration on Monday against the suspension of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Speaking to the protesters, IJT’s PU nazim Muhammad Ayub said the chief justice’s suspension was unconstitutional. He said the rulers were themselves ruling in an unconstitutional manner.

The faculty of law and policy at the Lahore University of Management Sciences also condemned and denounced the arbitrary action of the government with regard to the removal of the CJP.

TEHRIK-I-ISTAQLAL: Condemning the police excesses against the lawyers in its meeting held here with Ahsan Rashid in the chair, the Punjab leaders said the rulers had become unpopular because of growing inflation and unemployment and were resorting to use of force to suppress dissent to stay in power.

They urged political parties to support the struggle of the lawyers for the rule of law and fair general elections for restoration of true democracy in the country.

The TI leaders were of the view that the action against the CJP had exposed the dictatorial attitude of the government and exposed the myth of ‘enlightened moderation’.

The government had no right to call itself civilised after using the coercive tactics against the CJP, they concluded.
