Pen-sketches of Scotland squad


BRIDGETOWN, March 10: Penpix of Scotland's World Cup squad:

Craig Wright (RHB/RMF/captain). Age: 32. ODI appearances: 13. Debut: v Ireland, Ayr, Aug 5, 2006. The captain has been a regular in the Scottish team since August and his medium-fast bowling will be the key to stopping a run-feast by the experienced opponents.

Career: 162 runs (ave 18.00), HS 30, 22 wkts (ave 20.63), BB 4-29, 4w 1.

John Blain (RHB/RFM). Age: 28. ODI appearances: 18. Debut: v Australia, Worcester, May 16, 1999. The fast-medium bowler, who has played for Northamptonshire and Yorkshire in English county cricket, is another frontline bowler.

Career: 155 runs (14.09), HS 30*, 5 catches, 23 wkts (ave 31.95), BB 4-37, 4w 1.

Dougie Brown (RHB/RM). Age: 37. ODI appearances: 22. Debut: England v India, Sharjah, Dec 11, 1997. The right-arm seamer played nine one-day internationals for England before being dropped and opted to play for his native Scotland. His steady bowling helped England win a tournament in Sharjah in 1997 against India and the West Indies.

Career: 255 runs (ave 15.93), HS 50*, 1 50, 3 catches, 21 wkts (ave 37.76), BB 3-37.

Gavin Hamilton (LHB/RM). Age: 32. ODI appearances: 18. Debut: v Australia, Worcester, May 16, 1999. Played one Test match for England and was Scotland's batting lynchpin at the 1999 World Cup. He ended his professional career in the English county championship in 2005 but has decided to continue with Scotland at the World Cup.

Career: 594 runs (ave 39.60), HS 76, 3 50s, 2 catches and 1 stumping, 3 wkts (ave 53.33), BB 2-36.

Majid Haq (RHB/OB). Age: 24. ODI appearances: 10. Debut: v Bangladesh, Dhaka, Dec 17, 2006. A typical bits-and-pieces player who will be expected to shore up the lower order and chip in with wickets with his off-break bowling.

Career: 310 runs (ave 31.00), HS 71, 3 50s, 4 catches, 12 wkts (ave 35.58), BB 3-26.

Paul Hoffmann (RHB/RMF). Age: 37. ODI appearances: 12. Debut: v Pakistan, Edinburgh, June 27, 2006. The oldest member of the Scottish team, he is a steady medium-pacer.

Career: 54 runs (ave 6.75), HS 31, 3 catches, 15 wkts (ave 24.66), BB 3-22.

Glenn Rogers (RHB/SLA). Age: 29. ODI appearances: 4. Debut: v Bangladesh, Chittagong, Dec 15, 2006. The Australian-born Rogers is an attacking left-arm spinner with good control of line and length and is regarded as a key player for Scotland at the World Cup.

Career: 45 runs (22.50), HS 20*, 1 catch, 4 wkts (35.75), BB 2-22.

Douglas Lockhart (RHB/WK). Age: 31. ODI appearances: 4. Debut: v Pakistan, Edinburgh, June 27 2007. A promising opening batsman with an Oxford background.

Career: 64 runs (ave 32.00), HS 25*, 4 dismissals (all catches).

Ross Lyons (LHB/SLA). Age: 22. ODI appearances: 13. Debut: v Pakistan, Edinburgh, June 27, 2006. The specialist left-arm spinner in the team who has also graduated from the under-19 level.

Career: 77 runs (ave 38.50), HS 28, 2 catches, 10 wkts (56.20), BB 2-28.

Neil McCallum (RHB). Age: 29. ODI appearances: 14. Debut: v Pakistan, Edinburgh, June 27, 2006. The middle-order batsman has a one-day century to his credit.

Career: 307 runs (ave 21.92), HS 100, 1 100s, 1 50, 2 catches.

Dewald Nel (RHB/RMF). Age: 26. ODI appearances: 5. Debut: v Pakistan, Edinburgh, June 27, 2006 Another seamer who is expected to keep the runs in check.

Career: 5 runs, HS 3*, 2 catches, 3 wkts (ave 59.66), BB 1-34.

Navdeep Poonia (RHB/RM). Age: 20. ODI appearances: 8. Debut: v Ireland, Ayr, Aug 5, 2006. The Glasgow-born batsman has also made a Twenty20 appearance for English county Warwickshire.

Career: 111 runs (ave 13.87), HS 67, 1 50, 4 catches.

Colin Smith (RHB/WK). Age: 34. ODI appearances: 11. Debut: v Pakistan, Edinburgh, June 27, 2006. The team's wicket-keeper who is also expected to contribute with the bat.

Career: 144 runs (ave 18.00), HS 49, 17 dismissals (12 catches and 5 stumpings).

Ryan Watson (RHB/RM). Age: 30. ODI appearances: 14. Debut: v Pakistan, Edinburgh, June 27, 2006. A top order batsman who also has a one-day century to his credit.

Career: 506 runs (ave 38.92), HS 123*, 1 100, 2 50s, 6 catches, 3 wkts (ave 63.00), BB 3-18.

David Watts (RHB/RMF). Age: 27. ODI appearances: 12. Debut: v Netherlands, Ayr, Aug 6, 2006. Another top order batsman yet to prove himself at the international level.
