Mother, daughter given death sentence

By Our Correspondent

CHAKWAL, March 8: Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Akram Awan on Thursday awarded capital punishment to a woman and her daughter on two counts in a double murder case registered in Khairpur village.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 each on the convicts — Qamar Sultana and Riaz Begum — on two counts.

However, the court acquitted the third accused, Razia Bibi (another daughter of Qamar), by giving her the benefit of doubt.

According to the prosecution, the woman and her two daughters had killed 20-year-old Shazia and her niece Myra Qasim, 5, on June 29, 2006. The convicts put the bodies in a large sack and threw it in the open.

Meanwhile, the body of a 50-year-old man identified as Mohammad Saeed was found near Dhrukna village falling in the Kalar Kahar police limits on Thursday.

The police had detained a man on suspicion and shifted the body to the District Headquarters hospital for autopsy.

PPP: People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) Secretary-General Ghulam Abbas on Thursday said the government was triumphing over its own concept of enlightened moderation while being oblivious to the fact that more than 50 million people in the country were living below the poverty line.

Ghulam Abbas was talking to the members of the District Bar Association in Chakwal on Thursday.

He alleged that the rulers were involved in mega corruption scandals and said profitable government institutions were being sold at throwaway prices to favourites.

The PPP leader said the government had failed to protect the life and property of the masses and the entire country was facing a serious law and order situation.

Later, speaking at a “Meet the Press” programme at the Chakwal Press Club, Mr Abbas ruled out any deal between the government and his party.

He was of the view that the PPP had always struggled for democracy and a president in uniform would not be acceptable to the people of Pakistan.
