KARACHI, March 5: Eight activists of the Awami National Party were arrested on Monday by the Quaidabad police on the charges of extortion. Police said the suspected extortionists were arrested when they reached Naqshbandi Textile Mills to extort money on the complaint of mill manager Noor Uddin Noori. The suspects – Mukhtar, Anver Zeb, Mohammed Waseem, Jalal Shah, Gul Shah, Nawab Gul, Syed Iqrar and Hasan Ali – were booked under Sections 147, 148, 384, 386, 504, 109 and 114 of the PPC.

The police said some protesters took to the streets against the arrest of the ANP men and tried to disrupt the flow of vehicular traffic for awhile. However, they said, the police brought the situation under control.
