ISLAMABAD, March 4: The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League is holding its first meeting here on Monday afternoon after the merger of PPP Patriots to discuss the overall political situation, sources told Dawn on Sunday.
The sources said the party had worked out a strategy for winning the forthcoming elections in order to get a comfortable majority in parliament and to retain control of the government.
The CEC meeting, which is to be chaired by party president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain at the party secretariat, will also be attended by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, the chief ministers of Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh, and senior leaders of Patriots faction, including Rao Sikandar Iqbal, Faisal Saleh Hayat and Dr Sher Afgan Niazi.
The top PML decision-making body would consider assigning party offices to certain Patriot leaders as well as addressing their concerns with regard to the awarding of party tickets in the next general elections.
A party source said there has been a shrill in party ranks by a fresh press report quoting a special government committee which has reported that the army of federal cabinet ministers, including Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, were not in sight of a straight victory in the coming elections except one minister from Balochistan namely Sardar Yar Mohammad Rind.
The PML has a big task ahead to ensure all the incumbent ministers return to the seats they had won in the previous polls, sources claimed.
According to information from party secretary and minister of state for information Senator Tariq Azim, the top decision-making body will welcome new entrants into the party, besides looking into the latest political situation both within and outside the country.
Prime Minister Aziz will brief the meeting about the achievements of the government, especially his recent foreign tours.
