KARACHI: IT instrumental in public speaking: secretary
KARACHI, March 4: Sindh Secretary Information Technology Muhammad Yahya Waliullah has said one can get latest information on any topic with the help of 200 search engines on Internet.
Addressing at a seminar on “Art of Public Speaking” organised by Public Administration Department of Karachi University, he said Internet was the greatest invention of the last century and was available at affordable cost even to the poorest countries and under privileged societies. It was a great source of learning, he said, and maintained that progress of any country and society was measured in terms of e-readiness index, unlike GDP and per capita income.
Yahya Waliullah said ability to communicate and public speaking was God gifted and one could only improve and polish these traits through learning, practising and copying. He said what was crucially important in public speaking was analysing the psyche of audience, concentrating on the topic, searching for information data and facts on the subject.Time had changed and many in audience were not impressed with verbosity and dramatization, he said adding that information technology in the last two decades had changed the life style. The information technology was a cross cutting aid to any field or subject. There are over half a billion websites covering every subject of life, he said, adding that a public speaker could improve its discourse by making the use of information technology.
The secretary expressed hope that students of public administration and other departments would make use of the latest technologies in public speaking.
Samina Ibrahim, a lecturer at FAST, in her presentation showed how mind bogs down in grasping and understanding a point. She also demonstrated through many examples of this phenomenon.
Nazir Ahmed Vaid dealt with the theory and practices of communication. Khurram Rahat gave some tricks on public speaking.
Gerald Ray Shocklay, who is currently on a visit to Pakistan from the USA, said he was visiting Pakistan for the last 10 years and admired family bonds and traditions of extended families that were non-existent in western societies. He stressed on bridging the widening gap between Pakistan and the USA in many fields.
Later, Dr Pirzada Qasim thanked the speakers and distributed certificates among students instrumental in organising the seminar.—APP
