HYDERABAD, March 2: Eminent scholar and philosopher Justice (Rtd) Javed Iqbal has exhorted the Muslim Ummah to concentrate on advancement and development by bringing about a revolution in education and pursuit of knowledge, saying without power of education, dignity and honour cannot be achieved among the comity of nations.
He was delivering a lecture on “Meeting Point of Eastern and Western Thoughts and Cultures” organized by department of English, University of Sindh, at Shaikh Ayaz auditorium on Friday in connection with Professor Amina Khamisani Memorial Lecture series.
A large number of teachers and students, intellectuals, scholars, educationists and people from different walks of life attended the lecture.
Mr Iqbal said that there is a dire need for intellectual revolution in Muslim countries of the world to meet the challenges of the modern age.
He said that in present times, education is the only power which can change the destiny of Muslim world and revive its old glory. He said that science and scientific education is need of the day and Muslims of the world must focus all efforts on science education for advancement.
He said that it is a fact of history that in the golden age of Muslim Ummah all scientists were produced by the Madaris but added that in present day our modern education is divided in different categories.
He said that during dark ages of Europe, they learned from Muslim scholars of that time and took full advantage of innovations from the Muslim scholars.
He said that it is a well-known fact that surgery was introduced by the Muslim scientist in the middle ages and added that Madaris provided guidance to the European countries.
He said in present days it is amazing to witness the decline in Islamic culture.
He said that two movements viz; French revolution and industrial revolutions were launched which changed Europe. He said that industrial revolution created awareness among the European countries but “we Muslims fought against each other and lost power and resources”.
He said we still live in middle ages adding that it was amazing how changes took place and if anyone was to visit Spain he will find the Muslim glory.
He said that Muslims can again take lead from Europeans through development and added that for this purpose the Muslims must realize and change their attitude towards education.
He said that to achieve dignity and respect the Muslim countries must adopt proper democratic norms and respect human rights.
He said that in our country education system is divided and added that there are three types of education, madaris, formal education and English medium schools.
He said that we are running three kind of educational systems without unification. He said that for our education, prowess will come from learning French, Persian and Arabic languages. He said that for advancement and development we must learn from Japan, Korea and China.
He said that we have not done justice with ourselves and added that we must follow in the footsteps of our freedom fighters. He said that he had suggested to General Ayub Khan that all madaris must be affiliated with the universities for better output.
He said that we must first of all pay attention to science education which is key to advancement.
He said that it is need of the present time that we Muslims must adopt good things from the West for advancement and development.
He said that it is necessary to promote education in rural and remote areas and when the people become conscious and knowledgeable they will choose right type of leadership.
He said that youth is a big hope and hopefully they will promote thinking for betterment of the country.
The Vice Chancellor of the Sindh University, Mr Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, in his presidential remarks said that it is high time that Muslims followed scientific path which is path of Holy Quran.
He said that true knowledge is one which benefits mankind and added that our young generations have realized their duty and are also working for advancement and development through education.
