ISLAMABAD, March 1: Attaining the Millennium Development Goals and other development targets was the overarching objective behind the establishment of a “One UN”, said Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

He said so on Thursday at the launch of the reforms process of the same name. The premier described the exercise of making the world organisation more cohesive and integrated under the “One UN umbrella” as “pioneering efforts to revolutionise the working of the global body through an ambitious reforms process”.

He observed that the establishment of a “One UN” would require innovation, imagination, experimentation and cooperation. Mr Aziz — who co-chaired the High Level Panel on System-wide Coherence that gave the “One UN” concept — reiterated his government’s support for the initiative. “I am confident that we have the capability and commitment to make this exercise a resounding success.”

Pakistan and seven other countries — Albania, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uruguay, and Vietnam — had volunteered last year to undertake the “One UN pilot project” for exploring ways to transform the United Nations.
