‘Centre responsible for Basant deaths’

PESHAWAR, March 1: The NWFP Assembly in a resolution unanimously adopted on Thursday condemned the deaths of people during Basant and blamed the federal government for the killings and violating Supreme Court orders banning kite-flying.

The resolution, tabled by Shagufta Naz and Sabira Shakir of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, expressed grief over the loss of lives during Basant and said the central government by observing Basant at a time when the whole nation was shocked by the Samjuta Express tragedy and the deteriorating law and order in the country, had committed contempt of court and added salt to the wounds of people.

The assembly also adopted a resolution about establishment of separate prayer spots for women at railway stations, bust stands and public spots. The resolution was moved by Zubaida Khatoon of the MMA.

Another resolution urged the provincial government to run CNG buses in the province, particularly in Peshawar, and start an express bus service in the city.

The assembly also demanded that the federal government should release 50 per cent of the fund received for earthquake-hit areas from donors to the NWFP government so rehabilitation work in the affected areas could be started.—PPI
