Tribesmen hold rally against lawlessness

LANDI KOTAL, Feb 28: Tribesmen on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration against the killing of oil tanker driver Haji Muhammad Afridi in Banu and demanded of the government to take effective steps to bring under control the deteriorating law and order situation, especially the mounting cases of kidnappings for ransom and highway mugging, targeting oil tankers and their drivers. They also demanded compensation for the bereaved family.

Criminals killed Haji Mohammad, a resident of the Khyber Sultan Khel, on Tuesday in Banu’s Sarai Norang area when he was driving his empty tanker to Karachi.

The driver’s killing was the second serious incident of lawlessness in the past two days in the area.

Earlier, a man identified as Mukamel Shah, a resident of the Khyber Wali Khel, was seriously wounded when some gunmen riddled him with bullets.

The government’s law-enforcement agencies have yet to arrest criminals involved in these attacks.

These agencies have also failed to recover the stolen oil tanker which the criminals took away after the killing of its driver.

The protesting tribesmen raised slogans against the government. They said that despite the killings of a number of tribesmen by criminals the government had neither arrested the criminals nor awarded compensation to the bereaved family.

They demanded of the government to arrest the killers and award them exemplary punishment otherwise they would be forced to take alternative measures.

A jirga of the area also met the political authorities here on Wednesday in this regard and lodged their complaint with the administration.

The jirga made it clear that tribesmen would no more tolerate the killings of tribesmen in the settled areas and urged political administration to take up the issue with provincial and federal governments.
