MMA to hold election for district-level office-bearers

By Abdul Sami Paracha

KOHAT, Feb 25: In order to strengthen the party position before the coming general election, the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal has decided to hold district-level elections for office-bearers.

During a meeting of the election committee, presided over by Allama Tauqir Zia, adviser to NWFP chief minister, here on Sunday, the participants were informed that the central leaders had not yet taken any decision about forming an election alliance with other parties. However, the MMA would continue its seat adjustment policy like it did during the last elections.

The MMA has decided to complete the district-level election process before the dissolution of assemblies and nomination of the interim set-up in the NWFP.

The participants felt that the resignations of provincial law minister Zafar Azam and senior minister Sirajul Haq were providing opportunity to rivals to take advantage of the situation.

The meeting discussed the nominations for one National Assembly and three provincial assembly seats in Kohat and decided to inform the leaders about the party position and names of nominees.

Meanwhile, elections for the MMA Kohat district were held on Sunday at the residence of Jamil Ahmed Paracha, secretary-general of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F).

Pir Faheem of Jamaat-i-Islami was elected as district president of the MMA. Rasool Niaz was elected as senior-vice president, Sher Mohammad Tori, vice-president II, Abdus Salam, vice-president III, Maulana Abdul Hayee of JUI-F, secretary-general, Amjid Ali Shah, deputy secretary-general I, Amir Ullah, deputy secretary-general II, and Hafiz Hameed Ullah, secretary information.
