Australia will fall like Windies did, says Sobers
MUMBAI, Feb 22: West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers believes there are visible signs of an Australia decline today after their almost ten-year domination in world cricket.
In a recent interview during his visit to India with the touring West Indies squad, Sobers said Australian cricket team’s graph was going down rapidly which reminded him of the historic slump in the West Indies fortunes after their 15-year domination in the 1970s and the ‘80s.
“We saw the West Indies team of the 80s dominate world cricket and then start to decline. Do you see signs of that kind overall in Australian cricket? Even if they come through this World Cup, the dominance that they have had, like the West Indies in the 80s, has started to shrink a little and people are getting closer as they lose players like Warne, McGrath, and Gilchrist and Hayden over the next few years?” said Sobers.
“Oh yes, that will happen. It all goes in cycles, you know. There was once when England and Australia were the strengths of the world, and to beat them was a great feather in everybody's cap who beat them. Now, there are teams in the world that are so good. Australia have been there for a long time. And there will come a time when they will fall like the West Indies did.”—Agencies
