Six relatives of killer picked up: Zille Huma’s murder

GUJRANWALA, Feb 22: Police on Thursday picked up six relatives of minister Zille Huma’s killer, including his sister and brother-in-law, to investigate as if the accused committed the gruesome crime on his own or he was instigated by some religious group(s).
Reports said that police picked up the sister and brother-in-law of accused Maulvi Muhammad Sarwer from Ghakkhar and the rest of others from Gujranwala. Senior officers of investigation and the IB branch were quizzing them. They, however, denied that the accused had ever consulted them on the murder of the woman minister. But they did admit that the accused was not ashamed of his act.
While accused Maulvi Sarwer, who was detained at the Ghakkhar police station, told reporters that he would target stage actresses in future if the court acquitted him.
Meanwhile, Qul of Punjab social welfare minister Zille Huma was held on Thursday at her residence in Cantonment. Provincial ministers Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal and Rana Shamshad Ahmad Khan, other party leaders and senior officers of the district administration and police were also present.
POWER BILLS: Consumers could pay their electricity bills through credit cards round-the-clock as Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) and Al-Falah Bank signed an agreement in this regard here on Thursday.
This was stated by Gepco chief executive Rana Muhammad Ashraf Zahid during a ceremony of the signing agreement on the premises of the bank.
He said that around two million consumers in the region would benefit from the facility that would be provided to them from March 1.
Bank’s credit cards head Irfan Qureshi said that stalls would be set up in different offices of the company for the sale of credit cards.
Gepco human resources and administration director Col Ghazanfer Ali Khan, chief engineers Tanvir Safder Cheema and Nasir Mehmood besides other senior officers of the company and bank were present.
BY-POLLS: The by-election for the nazim seat of union council No 73 would be held on March 5 while the returning officer also allotted election symbols to candidates here on Thursday.
The seat fell vacant after nazim Hamid Raza was assassinated by his rivals a few months ago.
At least nine aspirants — Malik Abid Hussain, Kanwer Basharat Ali, Usman Awan, Israr Ahmad Khan, Musharraf Hussain, Imdad Hussain, Muhammad Nawaz, Muhammad Saleem and Shauket Ali filed their nomination papers.
ARRESTED: Baghbanpura police claimed on Thursday to have arrested a man and his son for their alleged involvement in kidnapping for ransom case of a minor boy.
Reports said that accused Muhammad Yousaf and his son Abu Sufian had released Sajid Amin, 10, son of Muhammad Amin, after receiving Rs100,000 ransom amount.
