Two-goal Keane guides Spurs into last 16

LONDON, Feb 19: Robbie Keane hit a stunning brace as Tottenham marched into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 4-0 win at Fulham on Sunday.

Spurs captain Keane, opened the scoring with a fine finish and he added an even better second goal after half-time before Dimitar Berbatov scored twice late on to complete the rout.

Jol had taken the bold move of picking Mido ahead of star striker Berbatov and his gamble paid instant dividends as the Egyptian helped Spurs take the lead after six minutes.

Mido, given the benefit of a tight offside call, rose above Philippe Christanval to flick on Paul Robinson's clearance and Keane surged away from Zat Knight to drive home a fierce volley from just outside the area for his eighth goal of the season.

Tottenham have looked fragile at the back this season and that soft centre was almost punished in the 17th minute when Brian McBride was allowed space to meet Alexei Smertin's cross with a deflected shot that was brilliantly tipped over by Robinson.Mido had shown his aerial prowess when he set-up Tottenham's opener, but he nearly gifted Fulham an equaliser when he misdirected a header from Franck Queudrue's throw-in towards his own goal.

Fortunately for Mido, Robinson was alert and produced a reflex stop to ensure his side reached half time ahead.

Aaron Lennon threatened to increase their lead when he ran onto a clearance and hit a rising shot that forced Jan Lastuvka to block at his near post.

Papa Bouba Diop then tested Robinson with a speculative long-range effort, but the England keeper was able to sprawl to his left to save.

Just as Fulham were enjoying their best spell, Tottenham took complete control with a carbon copy of their first goal in the 68th minute.

This time it was Gardner who launched a long pass forwards but Mido was the creator again as he won the header and Keane pounced on the flick to volley a superb strike past Lastuvka.

Moritz Volz gave Tottenham a scare moments later with a blistering shot that Robinson was at full-stretch to keep out.

But Berbatov, on as a replacement for Mido, got the third in the 77th minute when he beat Lastuvka after his initial effort rebounded back to him off a post.

Berbatov made it four with a delicate close-range chip over Lastuvka in the last minute before Vincenzo Montella was sent off in stoppage time for an elbow on Keane.—AFP
