50 suspects detained in Quetta blast probe

By Saleem Shahid

QUETTA, Feb 18: A suicide bomber who struck in a courtroom of a senior civil judge here on Saturday could not be identified and police on Sunday sent parts of his body to Islamabad for DNA tests and for restructuring his face for identification.

The Balochistan government has announced a reward of Rs2 million for anyone providing information about the identity of the suicide bomber.

The Civil Lines police have registered a case for the suicide attack on the court of senior civil judge Abdul Wahid Durrani.

Meanwhile, sources said special police teams raided different places in Quetta and detained around 50 suspects, 25 of them Afghan nationals.

The suspects were handed over to the authorities concerned for interrogation, said a senior police officer, adding that police and other law-enforcement agencies were monitoring the activities of Afghans.

Two special teams constituted by the Balochistan Inspector General of Police also started investigation into the suicide bombing. Sources said the investigation teams comprising senior police officers were working on different aspects on the basis of statements of the injured people and evidence collected from the site.

Chief Minister Jam Mohammad Yousuf and Home Minister Mir Shoaib Nausherwani have said involvement of a foreign hand in the incident could not be ruled out. Police and other law-enforcement agencies are also working on this aspect. “DNA test is important and we are waiting for the result,” police sources said.
