Big Show outclasses Toru Khan

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Feb 18: Four-year-old filly, Big Show, ridden by jockey Nasir (II) made all the running to win the Toyota Derby Trial classic run over 2000metres amidst an atmosphere of festivity coupled with glamour at the Racecourse on balmy Sunday.

There were overcast conditions right from the opener and it drizzled throughout all the eight races.

Owned by one of the Karachi's leading owner, Haji Ghulam Dastgeer, and trained by S. Ehtisham, Big Show was sent off at five to one to win. She beat 50 to 100 favourite local colt Toru Khan, partnered by Aamir Parvaiz by one and a half lengths.

Running relaxed, Big Show strode clear of the front-runners' pack in the final 200metres quiet beautifully and then drew away leaving Toru Khan staggering to face defeat to the great surprise of his backers, who considered he was unbeatable. Undoubtedly he had established his credentials with an unbeaten streak of five win in a row that came to a pathetic end.

Earlier in the fourth race, the same owner-trainer and jockey combination had a big triumph when their bay colt, Fair Diamond outpaced his six rivals to win the Bin Qasim Cup over the sprinting distance of 1200metres.

Fair Diamond backed at two to one beat fairly and squarely favourite colt Headingley by a distance.

Owned by the Lahore Race Club chairman, Tariq Aziz, Headingley was piloted by Shahid Rehman. Janu Manu finished third, half a length back.

The bay English filly, Miss Thailand, showed her bloodline class by winning the PTCL Cup contested over 1400metres.

Backed at three to one, the filly from Grand Lodge trained by Haji Fazal Hadi beat Go With The Wind by a distance. Owned by Malik Hamid Ali Noon, the filly was piloted by jockey M. Hanif in a start to finish style.

Dextrity and Sun Stroke completed the frame among six runners.
