Salman’s ton in vain as Islamabad win

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Feb 17: Despite an unbeaten century by Lahore Lion’s skipper Salman Butt, Islamabad Leopards won the opening one-day match of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Silver League by two wickets at the Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Lions bat first and scored 236 for loss of nine wickets in allotted 50 overs. Test-discard Salman Butt, who has been included among reserved players for the upcoming World Cup, scored 129.

He faced 149 deliveries and hit 15 sweetly timed boundaries.

Salman, who had to lead Lahore Eagles in the Gold League, decided to play for the Lions as he wanted to remain in Lahore where the national training camp for the World Cup is going to start from Thursday.

For Islamabad, medium-pacer Bilal Asad captured three wickets for 30 runs while Zohaib Ahmed and Saad Altaf took two each.

In reply, the visitors reached the target in 49.4 overs for loss of eight wickets.

The top order gave Islamabad a fine start, despite opener Umair Khan (12), who went out cheaply on the total of 18. But the other opener, Afaq Raheem, along with Raheel Majeed put Lion's bowlers on sword, collecting 69 runs in the second-wicket stand as the total reached 87 by 17th over.

Afaq faced 73 deliveries in his innings of 38, laced with four boundaries.

Soon the winners suffered another blow as Raheel was brilliantly caught by Wasim Khan at long-leg off medium-pacer Waqas Ahmed on the total of 109.

Raheel struck two sixes and five boundaries in his knock of 43 off 38 deliveries.

Bazid Khan then led the chase with timely half-century. He was involved in two small partnerships, first with Bilal Asad and then with Atif Ashraf. Bilal and Atif scored 34 and 25 runs respectively.

Bazid scored 56 off 87 deliveries with the help of three fours. When he was clean bowled by Wahab, Islamabad were only 17 runs away from the target with four wickets in hand.

Naeem Anjum and Zohaib Ahmed remained unbeaten to complete the task.
