HALIFAX (Canada), Feb 17: Organizers of Halifax's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games announced details Friday of a planned 17-sport lineup, including the non-Olympic events squash, netball, lawn bowls and rugby sevens.
Athletics, aquatics, basketball, boxing, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, shooting, table tennis, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling are also on tap should the Canadian contender win the November 9 vote at Sri Lanka.
Glasgow, Scotland, and Abuja, Nigeria, are Halifax's rivals for the event.
India will host the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
Halifax's bid committee received input from the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth nations before making a final decision on the lineup.
“Our sport program is based on hosting a Games that reflects what's important to all 71 Commonwealth nations and territories while developing legacy programs,” said Fred MacGillivray, Halifax's 2014 bid chair.
