KESC to set up new power unit

Published February 17, 2007

KARACHI, Feb 16: Water and Power Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi said here on Friday that the KESC was building a new power plant and two foreign companies had shown interest in setting up 2,000mw coal-based plants.

He said the ADB would provide $3 billion for rehabilitation and augmentation of the country's outdated power supply system. The bank was also interested in the rehabilitation of KESC's system, he added.

Mr Jatoi was talking to reporters at the Alternate Energy Board office in DHA after having a briefing at the technical committee meeting.

“Although our system has surplus energy, our transmission system has become overloaded by 80 per cent to 100 per cent,” the minister added.

“We are planning to overhaul the system and the government has allocated Rs4.5 billion,” he said.—APP
