KARACHI, Feb 16: All 3,000 government schools of the city will set aside 20 minutes daily for cleanliness during which teachers and students will clean their classrooms and surroundings, said City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on Friday.

This practice will start from the newly inaugurated town education development center in Liaquatabad Town. The nazim said this while inaugurating the first Town Educational Development Centre (TEDC) set up in Government Girls School Gulbai, Liaquatabad Town. He also asked EDO Education to make arrangements in this respect.

The city government will spend Rs400 million to establish 125 schools in 36 campuses as model schools by the end of December 2007. The teachers of these schools will be paid handsomely. Books, uniforms and refreshments for students will be free.

The TEDC has been set up in collaboration with the private sector Renovation work was done with the collaboration of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The renovation includes whitewash, repair of 73 classrooms and 37 bathrooms and setting up a state-of-the-art computer lab. The TEDC will also have a healthcare center for teachers, students and their parents. was also established as all water and sewerage system have also been revamped.

The City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal in his inaugural address said only such buildings would not bring change, rather we as a people had to change our behaviour.

He asked these institutes to not only turn out good degree-holders but good human beings as well. The nazim said this while inaugurating the first Town Educational Development Center (TEDC) set up in Government Girls School Gulbai in Liaquatabad Town
