PESHAWAR, Feb 15: Leprosy has entered the elimination phase in the NWFP and the target set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for its control has been achieved three years ahead of its stipulated time.

This was claimed by health experts at a ceremony organised by the Provincial Leprosy Control Programme in connection with the World Leprosy Day at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) here on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Director General of Health Services Dr Jalilur Rahman said: “Leprosy is caused by a specific bacterium and is totally curable. A proper treatment can prevent the risk of deformation in leprosy patients.”

He said the disease which was a major public health issue in the past was now under control in the province. Patients were being provided with better treatment facilities under the leprosy control programme, Dr Rahman said, adding that the facility of free re-constructive surgery was also available.

He said creating awareness about the disease and ensuring a dignified status for leprosy patients in society were among the goals of the programme.

Secretary Health Abdul Samad Khan appreciated the contribution of leprosy staff for the control of the disease. He asked them to continue their efforts with dedication for complete elimination of the disease from the province. He assured his best efforts for the construction of an operation theatre for leprosy patients at the LRH.
