KARACHI, Feb 12: The newly-elected councillors of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP) have chosen Prof Zafar Ullah Chaudhry, a senior surgeon from Lahore, as new president of the college.
The councillors, elected in a country-wide polling on Saturday, held their first formal meeting on Monday and elected Prof Chaudhry as successor of the outgoing president Prof Mohammad Sultan Farooqui.
On the occasion, they also resolved to make efforts towards restoring the image of the college and dignity of its diplomas, said a source privy to the meeting.
A task force was set up to review the college’s financial matters and suggest measures to make the access to the training and research programmes of the college easier, besides reviewing its system of examinations.
The new president will be assisted by two Vice-Presidents, Prof Abdullah Jan Jaffar (Balochistan) and Prof Mohammad Daud Khan (NWFP), and a treasurer, Prof Ata-ur-Rahman (Sindh).
The council especially resolved to choose Prof Syed Mohibur Rab of Karachi, as chief patron of the CPSP. In addition, Prof Rab will perform as Director General, International Relations, and chairman of the CPSP Trust.
Only four of the CPSP councillors elected in 2002 have been able to return in the election.
The re-elected councillors are: Prof Abdullah Jan Jaffar, Prof Zafar Ullah Chaudhry, Prof Rashid Latif Khan and Prof Farrukh Zaman.
The other elected councillors are: Prof Syed Mohibur Rab, Dr Rizwan Azami, Prof Ata-ur-Rahman, Prof Abdul Sattar Memon, Prof Tariq Mahmood Khan, Dr Ghulam Asghar, Prof M. Daud Khan, Prof Ziaur Rehman, Prof Amer Aziz, Prof Khalid Masood Gondal, Prof Rizwana Chaudhri, Prof Mohammad Shaoib Shafi, Prof Rakhshanda Rehman, Prof Mohammad Amjad, Dr Moham-mad Asghar Butt and Dr Ghulam Mujtaba.
