Senate to debate law, order today

ISLAMABAD, Feb 11: The debate sought by the combined opposition on law and order will be wound up by the interior minister when the Senate meets on Monday afternoon after a two-day recess. The debate on law and order started last Friday.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi told Dawn on Sunday that the upper house summoned on the requisition of the combined opposition would be prorogued after completion of the debate on law and order and would be convened again on Friday.

The Senate and the National Assembly are convened as routine on Fridays so as the two-day weekly holidays immediately occurring could count as working days and the MPs from both sides get benefit of two days, including air ticket and other allowances.

PPP parliamentary secretary Izhar Amrohi differed with the minister’s estimate, saying that proceedings in all probability were likely to be carried on till Tuesday.

He said the house was requisitioned basically to discuss PIA affairs on which the opposition had boycotted the proceedings during the last session of the upper house.
