Abhi Abhi tipped to lift Jashan-e-Baharan Cup

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Feb 10: Four-year-old chestnut filly Abhi Abhi is tipped to atone for previous loss by lifting the Jashan-e-Baharan Cup in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Beaten by three-and-a-half lengths by King Of Sanghar in the seven furlongs last outing, she is expected to avenge the defeat by reigning supreme.

Her likely challengers are two form horses – Makina and King Of Sanghar – who are likely to pose her serious challenge in a field of six contestants in the six furlongs race.

Another four-year-old dark bay filly Stormy Kiss looks set to make it two-in-a-row should she sprint to victory in the concluding event going over a distance of six furlongs.

She posted a facile 12 lengths victory over Moon Raker in her last run on Jan 14.

Her stable mate Silent Angel and Tharkyee look certain for the following two places.

Three-year-old bay filly Phapha Kutni who stunned favourite Sonu Love Mani in the last meeting is fancied to come out with similar performance by topping the field which has seven aspirants. She should be chased by chestnut Sindh Malook and colt Inside Story for the places.

Five-year-old mare Patricia who has been off colour in the recent past has been rated to sprint to victory by overcoming Can’t Catch Me and Sir Jee who are the two form horses among others in the field.

Birj-ul-Arab whose winning streak was intercepted by Can’t Catch Me possesses credential to storm home in a strong field of 18 runners.

Bay horse Shah Pasand should gallop to victory in the opener to be followed by mare Princess Rozi in the next.

After being well backed last week Princess Rozi was withdrawn by the owner before the race. He was penalised by the KRC administrator and entry of horse was stopped for 15 days.

Surprisingly, she has been included in race No 2 in spite of the punishment by the KRC Racing Committee.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Shah Mardan Shah Shah Pir Pagara who heads the Racing Committee has taken serious note of rider Riaz Mohammad of Lucky Friend who let lose his mount in the last race on Feb 3 and remained standing at the starting gate.

Besides withdrawing the licence of rider and banning Lucky Friend’s entry pending enquiry, he has directed members of the committee to function without any interference.
