Action against Afridi unlikely
JOHANNESBURG, Feb 6: No action is expected to be taken against Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi after an incident during the first One-day International against South Africa at Centurion on Sunday.
Afridi is alleged to have swung his bat at a spectator as he was making his way up the stairs to the dressing-room after he had been dismissed for 17. His action was apparently in response to something shouted by the spectator.
Brian Murgatroyd, the ICC media and communications manager said on Tuesday that either the South African team or Cricket South Africa (CSA) management could have laid a complaint against Afridi if they were so inclined for action.
"The ICC Code of Conduct says a person eligible to lodge a complaint — and that will be the umpires, the team managers, the CEO of the home board or the ICC chief executive — must do so within 18 hours of the end of the match. The ICC chief executive, however, can lodge a complaint within five days," said Murgatroyd.
Murgatroyd indicated that the most that was likely to happen was a little chat between Chris Broad, the match referee, Talat Ali, the Pakistan manager and Afridi.—Agencies
