Jirga forms volunteers’ body to check crime
MARDAN, Feb 6: Expressing concern over the rising incidents of kidnapping for ransom and crime, the Mardan Aman Jirga (peace committee) announced the formation of a volunteers’ body to check criminal activities.
A general meeting of the jirga was held here on Tuesday.
Participants of the meeting deplored the rising incidents of kidnapping for ransom and urged people to stand united in the face of criminals.
They said that the government had failed to check crime and provide security to people.
The meeting also criticised the kidnapping of senior journalist Sohail Qalandar and demanded that the government should ensure his safe recovery.
The meeting was presided over by Abdul Qadir Mohmand and attended among others by Syed Kamal Shah, former senator and PML-N leader Saranjam Khan, District Nazim Himayatullah Mayar, former provincial finance minister Iftikhar Mohmand, PPP leader Arshad Khan, Tehsil Nazim Ihsanullah Bacha, Syed Rehman Mohmand, former senator Syed Shahzad Gul Bacha, MPA Amanat Shah Haqqani, Anjuman Tajiran Mardan president Haji Mohammad Islam, Arshad Manan Yousufzai, UC Baghdada Nazim Hamayun Khilji, Nazim Sikandar Hayat, JUI-F leader Qaisuruddin, Rizwanullah Sheda and members of the Action Committee of the Mardan Press Club.
Earlier, journalists in Takhtbai town staged a protest demonstration against the kidnapping of Mr Qalandar and demanded his immediate recovery.
Compensation: In a related development, Peshawar Electric Supply Company Chief Executive Brig Sakhi Marjan Khan said that the killers of Wapda driver Sultan Room would be brought to justice.
The Pesco chief went to the residence of late Sultan Room and offered condolence on his death.
He handed over a cheque for Rs200,000 to his family.
Mr Khan also announced employment for the deceased’s elder son as assistant lineman in Pesco.
It may be mentioned that Sultan Room was kidnapped and killed by three people a few days ago.
Police arrested the accused near Mandani and recovered the official vehicle from them.
