LAHORE, Feb 4: On a day of upsets Mohammad Rehman of Royal Palm Golf Club fired a card of 68, leaving behind two-day leader Danyal Jehangir, to win the Governor's Cup golf championship at the Lahore Gymkhana course on Sunday.
Rehman's three-day aggregate was 210 to win the main trophy.
Rehman with Hanif Rabbani of Defence Club, Karachi were the only two possible strong contenders against two-day leader Danyal, when all went out in one flight on the final day.
Rehman and Hanif were at 142 each, before the start of the final day, only two strokes behind to Danyal. But the brilliance brought prestigious reward to Rehman, who succeeded in stopping Danyal’s advance.
In the process Danyal had to suffer as he failed to match M.Rehman's superb performance and golfing power on a day when temperament played an important part.
Rehman's shots off the tee were accurate and his skill on the greens was a treat to watch.
Also appreciable performance was of Omer Azim and Amir Mehmood, who earned second and third position with the aggregate of 212 and 214, respectively.
At one stage, Omer had come in a position to become the leader, but the missed birdie putt on the 15th hole which compelled him to stay on course for the second slot only as he finished the day with a score of 69.
Amir Mehmood captured the third slot by virtue of some glorious play on the final day ended with a net score of 68.
Danyal, who had a net card of 73 on final day to come down to the sixth position, however, won the gross event with an aggregate of 219 (72, 72, 75).
His elder brother Aadil Jehangir came second, despite falling far away with aggregate of 225 ( 77, 74 and 74).
Wasim Rana came third.
The lady participants are increasing in number as against the past practice when only four or five turned up to compete. Nineteen competed in this tournament. The winner of Net was Kashifa Mohsin with two-day aggregate of 142 (79, 63). Nushmiya Sukhera ended up as runner-up with rounds of 83 and 60 (143).
