President’s participation in PML rallies questioned

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Feb 4: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Parliamentarians has urged the Election Commission and the Supreme Court Chief Justice to take notice of President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s participation in the ruling party’s public rallies in sheer violation of the Election Commission’s rules.

Punjab PPP’s information secretary Farzana Raja in a statement here Sunday said the EC had already asked the president not to take part in the PML campaign. But the president’s participation in the ruling party’s campaign indicted the helplessness of the Election Commission, she said.

Ms Raja, who is also member of the Punjab Assembly, said if the EC was so helpless how could it ensure transparency in the forthcoming elections?

She also accused the government of spending national funds on public meetings of Musharraf and the Punjab Chief Minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

She said that despite utilising the public transportation fleet and the forced participation of government servants in these public meetings, the government failed to gather a reasonable crowd of people and termed it a “flop show.”
