JKLF to oppose imposed Kashmir formula

By Our Reporter

RAWALPINDI, Feb 4: Chief of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Amanullah Khan on Sunday said his party would “fight tooth and nail” any formula imposed on the Kashmiris as a solution to the lingering dispute.

According to a press statement, Mr Khan was commenting on the latest ideas being discussed in political circles, which he considered as an attempt to evolve a proposal through some Indian and Pakistani officials with the consent of “puppet” Kashmiri leaders and present it as Kashmiri people’s formula to solve the issue.

About Kashmir Solidarity Day being observed in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir on February 5, Mr Khan said the day had no historical significance vis-a-vis Kashmir issue and, as such, the JKLF would not participate in its programmes.

He said the day was being observed in reference to what he called an “ignominious” January 5, 1949 resolution of the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) under which, he said, Kashmiris were deprived of their right to opt for complete independence of their motherland.

The JKLF chief said Kashmir day should be observed on August 13 as it was on that date in 1948 that India and Pakistan signed the first UNCIP resolution on Kashmir which provided for unfettered right of self-determination to the Kashmiris.

He said the JKLF did not approve President Pervez Musharraf’s four-point formula as a permanent solution to the Kashmir issue as it made no reference either to Kashmiris’ inherent right to self-determination nor to reunification of their divided state.

But he said the JKLF would “consider the formula as a first step towards a permanent solution of the issue”.
