HYDERABAD, Feb 4: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) on Sunday urged the government to take action against sugar mills which were unscrupulously deducting 15 to 20 maunds of sugarcane from each cane vehicle.

The chamber’s meeting presided over by Mir Murad Ali Talpur urged action against the mills for causing losses to the growers and decided to obtain modern technology from America and Australia to save mango orchards and improve the fruit’s quality to international standards.

The meeting noted that Sindh’s mango was in great demand throughout the world but invariably came under different diseases’ attack for want of modern technology and neglect.

The meeting observed that the good quality mango could fetch a lot of foreign exchange and appointed a four four-member committee headed by Anwar Bachani tasked with gathering proposals from mango growers for bringing improvement in the fruit’s quality.

The meeting noted that Pakistan was number three among the date producing countries of the world and only Khairpur district harvested 350,000 matric tons of date, which was exported to China, France, America, Germany, South Africa, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore and many Arab countries.

Still, the government had failed to provide any facility or incentive to the date' growers, the meeting said and urged the government to establish a tissue culture laboratory and a cold storage in Khairpur and grant the growers interest free loans. The meeting formed another four-member committee tasked with improving quality of dates. The committee led by Qadir Bux Mari would work to create awareness among growers about the use of latest technology in date farming.
