CA, players locked in sponsorship row

SYDNEY, Feb 2: Australian cricketers are on a collision course with their board after talks to resolve a sponsorship row between two sides ended in a stalemate.

A report in Sydney Morning Herald said Aussies cricketers are not very pleased with their new team sponsor Commonwealth Bank as contractual obligations are so wide ranging that they stop them from signing up for a large number of personal endorsements.

Matthew Hayden and skipper Ricky Ponting lost lucrative deals due to Commonwealth Bank's extensive ‘category protection’ for $6.5 million agreement with Cricket Australia.

Ponting's manager Sam Halvorsen admitted his client's personal endorsement deals were becoming limited due to “breadth of protection being sought by Cricket Australia for CBA''.

He confirmed talks between Cricket Australia and Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) failed to resolve dispute.—Agencies
