LAHORE, Feb 2: The Punjab government has launched a campaign against noise and air pollution in eight districts of the province.

Punjab Environment Minister Anjum Amjad told journalists after inaugurating the campaign on The Mall on Friday that Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan, Sargodha, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan were included in the campaign.

She said special squads, comprising officials from the environment department, traffic police and district governments, had been constituted to check growing pollution and noise-generating vehicles.

Anti-pollution squads had been provided with the latest instruments to check sound and noise levels of all types of vehicles, she added. The minister said the campaign was not rickshaw specific, however, the ratio of three-wheelers was higher than that of all other vehicles challaned during all campaigns launched in the past.

She said the government was promoting the use of CNG to help control pollution. She sought help from the media and non-government organisations to play their due role in creating awareness about the hazards of pollution.—APP
