Citizens’ group to monitor upcoming elections
ISLAMABAD, Feb 2: A number of well-known personalities from media, legal profession, civil society and former members of the superior judiciary and armed forces, presently having no political affiliation, have formed a citizens’ group to begin an independent monitoring of the coming general elections in Pakistan.
Facilitated by Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development And Transparency (Pildat), the group, formally called “Citizens Group on Electoral Process”, has been formed with an aim at contributing towards holding of free, fair and credible elections in the country, says a press release on Friday.
The group will work to ensure timely identification, communication and rectification of issues relating to electoral process. The group will regularly monitor the performance of the institutions involved in holding of elections and the activities of political parties and candidates.
The group has unanimously elected Justice (retired) Wajihuddin Ahmed, a former judge of the Supreme Court, as its chairman.
