ITF U-14 Tennis: Pakistanis, Malaysians advance


ISLAMABAD, Jan 31: Heera Ashiq of Pakistan, pairing with Merzuki M. Asri of Malaysia, and an all-Malaysian duo of Mohamed Khan and Heshaam Deen advanced into the boys doubles final of ITF Asian Under-14 Junior Tennis Championships at clay courts of Islamabad Club on Wednesday.

Ashiq and Merzuki proved too good for Oran and Long from Cambodia, winning in straight sets 6-0,6-2 by displaying powerful ground shots from the baseline.

In the other boys doubles semi-final, Mohamed Khan and Heshaam Deen outplayed Pakistani pair Khurram Faizan and Raza S. Zohair in a well-contested three-set match.

In the boys singles event, Naing of Myanmar and Orn of Cambodia moved into the boys singles finals.

Orn fought hard to win his encounter against Jibranul Haq in a three-set match while Naing showed excellent form to eliminate Raza S. Zohair in straight sets.

In the girls event, Boey of Malaysia and Huynh of Vietnam qualified for the girls singles final by beating their respective opponents.

A total of 24 matches were played Wednesday.

On Thursday, boys singles final will be played at 9:15am followed by girls singles final while girls doubles final will be played at 1:00pm and boys doubles final at 2:30p.m. —APP
