Processions pelted with stones

Dawn Report

SHIKARPUR, Jan 31: Youm-i-Ashur was observed in a peaceful manner throughout the Sindh province on Tuesday except a few minor incidents of violence in Shikarpur and Dadu districts in which some people threw stones at mourning processions. However, in all cases the situation was brought under control before it could spiral into a sectarian clash.

In Shikarpur some students of a madressah in the Allahabad mohalla pelted stones at the mourners when they passed their seminary, injuring Sikandar Ali Dal and Inayat Hussain Veesar.

Religious leaders belonging to Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam and Shia organisations later met to settle the dispute.

Police registered an FIR against nine seminary students on the complaint of Rafique Ahmed Abro.

DADU: Mourners’ processions were pelted with stones in two villages and a miscreant fired in the air to frighten away a women’s procession in another village of the district.

Reports reaching here said that three people reportedly threw stones at a procession in the Meersan village of K. N. Shah taluka who were later arrested by police and Rangers.

In another incident, unknown people threw stones at a procession in Hero Khan village of Johi taluka but police managed to control the situation. In the third such incident in Haji Khan village Shahzado Laghari fired in the air to frighten away a women’s procession.

However, calm was ensured after Laghari’s tribal chief Akbar Laghari and Taluka Nazim Dr Bandah Ali Laghari apologised on behalf of the miscreant.

NAWABSHAH: The main Alam and Zuljanah procession started from Murtazavi Imambargah in Mohini Bazaar and ended at Mabdululoom Imambargah after passing through Shiraz Chowk, Lal Market Road and Shahdadpur Road.

Mourning processions were taken out in Naushahro Feroze, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas, Jacobabad, Moro, Kandiaro, Tharushah, Halani and other cities and towns of Sindh.
