Khuhro wants old voter lists restored

Published February 1, 2007

LARKANA, Jan 31: The leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, has urged the government to restore old voters’ lists and register new voters who had attained the age of 18.

Talking to journalists in the Chajjira village in Qambar on Wednesday, he said Nadra had issued Computerised National Identity Cards only to a small number of people in Sindh, particularly in the Qambar-Shahdadkot district. People’s Party Parliamentarians MNA Khalid Iqbal Memon was also present.

Mr Khuhro claimed that only in the Qambar-Shahdadkot district, 300,000 eligible voters had been left unregistered.

He alleged that Nadra had been established to please pro-government people. He said soon after establishment, Nadra was allocated Rs2 billion and within its first year of operation a scam of embezzlement of Rs1 billion surfaced. This speaks volumes for the “transparency” in voters’ registration, he said.

He said that in 2002’s voters’ lists, about 500,000 new voters had been registered in the Qambar-Shahdadkot district but in the fresh lists, only 275,000 voters had been registered. This kind of exercise had been witnessed through out the country, he claimed.

He said the law and order situation in the country was deteriorating and big cities had been hit by suicide attacks. He said bandits were roaming about freely in interior of Sindh. He also expressed concern over tribal clashes in the province.

In the Qambar-Shahdadkot district, he said, there had been 10 murders, the district nazim’s vehicle was fired upon at and police were deprived of service arms during the last 15 days, but no arrest had been made so far.

The PPP leader said his party believed in democracy and it had never come to power through “backdoor”. The PPP had never entered into a deal with any government before, neither would it strike a deal with the Gen Pevez Musharraf government, he added.

He hoped that the PPP would win the coming general election. He said party chairperson Benazir Bhutto would return to the country once the election schedule was announced.

On this occasion, Mr Khuhro also condoled with Qambar PPP deputy general secretary Mujeebur Rehman Bhutto on the death of his uncle Arbab Bhutto. Local PPP leaders were also present.

KILLED: A man was shot dead allegedly by his two brothers on the airport road in the Allahabad locality on Wednesday.

Nisar Ahmad Bhutto was sitting at a shop when his brothers Ghulam Ali and Hameed Bhutto allegedly fired on him.

Ghulam Hussain alias Jumman, father of the deceased, registered an FIR against his sons Ghulam Ali and Hameed Bhutto at the Dari police station.

Police said the reason behind the killing was a dispute over property, but sources said the two men had killed their brother because he had killed his mother Latifan about eight years ago over some property matter.
