4kg heroin seized, student held

RAWALPINDI, Jan 31: A Pakistani student of Amsterdam University was arrested by the Anti Narcotics Force for carrying over four kg heroin at the Islamabad International Airport on Tuesday

The ANF commander, Rawalpindi region, Brig Muhammad Asif Alvi speaking at a press conference on Wednesday said Ishfaq-ur-Rehman, 26, resident of Orangi Town Karachi went to Amsterdam on October 3, 2005 for pursuing a graduation degree.

Ishfaq’s father and uncle arranged Rs525,000 for his travel and university’s expenses. But he was trapped by one of his Pakistani expatriate students who convinced him that he could pay back the money to his parents, if he joins his group.

“A Pakistani student Mudassar Ali from Hungoo developed friendly relations with me being Pakistani Pashtoo speaking and convinced me for drug trafficking,” Ishfaq-ur-Rehman said.

He said after he agreed, he was sent to Karachi on December 16, 2006 and not allowed to see his family.

From Karachi, he travelled to Islamabad where the gang members (relatives of Mudassar Ali) were waiting for him at the airport. Right from the airport he was driven to a guest house in G-8/2 and later he was shuttled between four different hotels till January 30 when he was scheduled to board on PK-769 for Amsterdam. He was captured by the ANF staff when the check-in of PK 769 was underway on Tuesday. He was remanded in the ANF custody by the court.

He was to be paid 6000 euros for successful trip.

Meanwhile, in another swoop the ANF staff arrested three persons from France Colony F-7/4 and recovered 3.490 kg Charas from them. The narcotics was to be smuggled to Dubai, Bangkok, London, Kuala Lumpur and Amsterdam.

The arrested persons were identified as Rizwan Masih, Younas Masih and Aftab.

The ANF staff arrested another passenger Zulfiqar Ali, a resident of Hafizabad while he was boarding on Beijing flight from Islamabad and recovered 1.035 kgs of heroin from his baggage.

In another crackdown, the ANF staff arrested a passenger Mohammad Omer from Islamabad International airport while he was boarding a Dubai flight. The passenger had swallowed 104 capsules filled wit 750 grams of heroin.
