KARACHI: Fumes from factory endanger lives

By Ali Hazrat Bacha

KARACHI, Jan 31: The inhabitants of Bawani Chali, Site Town, have complained against a battery manufacturing company for using chemicals which they said produced dangerous fumes and was causing respiratory and chest diseases among residents of the area especially minors.

A resident of the locality said, “we have talked to the concerned company’s officials many times about the adverse effect of the chemicals they use, but to no avail.

Some factory employees, on condition of anonymity, said that their health was also suffering due to the use of chemicals, but poverty forced them to continue to work in hazardous conditions.

The residents also expressed concern over the procedure of loading and unloading of heavy consignments at the new factory gate which is recently opened. They said its use was a threat to the kuchha houses located adjacent to the factory. They said the gate also blocked the only exit to rain water. When this scribe contacted, the factory’s officials, they refused to comment on the issue.
