PESHAWAR, Jan 29: A procession was taken out on Monday to mark the 9th of Muharram which passed through Saddar bazaar here amid tight security. The faithful had started assembling at the Imambargah Hussainia early on Monday who later took out the procession. The procession was joined by scores of people from different parts of the city before its culmination at the Fawara Chowk.

No untoward incident was reported. The processionists paid tribute to the Karbala martyrs through Marsia and Noha. They also beat their chests.

Paramedics from the local hospitals were accompanying them to provide first aid, while those with deep wounds were rushed to hospitals.

Monday was a public holiday and all shops, business centres, and offices of government, semi-government and autonomous organisations had been closed down. No one was permitted to drive through the main Saddar bazaar throughout the day. However, passers-by were allowed to enter the area.

The newly-appointed Capital City Police Officer, Abdul Majeed Marwat, along with the Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations), Iftikhar Ahmad Khan, accompanied the processionists.

All people, irrespective of their ethnic and religious backgrounds, showed their resentment over the suicide attack of Saturday which claimed many lives.
