GUJRANWALA, Jan 27: Over 28,000 deserving people will be given compensation through banks instead of post offices under the Food Support Programme (FSP) and all record is being computerised in this regard.

This was stated by Baitul Maal district incharge Asif Jehangir Warraich while speaking at a briefing here on Saturday.

He said the poor were being paid a compensation of Rs3,000 each through post offices. But scores of them complained that postal officials were not making them payment properly.

He said all the deserving people had been directed to open their accounts in branches of National Bank and Habib Bank.

Mr Warraich said a new list of the destitute was being prepared with the cooperation of respective nazims and councillors.

PROTEST: Over 200 sanitary workers took out a procession on Saturday in protest against non-payment of an extra salary in connection with Christmas despite a lapse of one month.

Reports said the sanitary workers gathered outside the office of the district nazim and chanted slogans against the administration.

Later, they took out a rally, led by union leaders Naseeruddin Humayun Malik and Mian Ataur Rehman, and marched along various roads.

Speaking on the occasion, the union leaders said the City District Government Gujranwala had promised payment of an extra salary before Christmas. They also held a meeting with district nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha at his office who assured them payment of all outstanding dues shortly.

ACE: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) received overall 2,050 complaints against government departments with police topping the list in 2006 against 811 in 2005.

As many as 389 complaints were received against revenue department, 105 against local government, education department (110) and 107 against irrigation department.

SMUGGLING BID FOILED: The local general post office staff claimed on Saturday to have foiled an attempt to smuggle 1kg heroin to US in a parcel and handed over the accused to anti-narcotics force.

Reports said Matloob Masih of Aziz Colony came to GPO and handed over a parcel of clothes to the respective official for sending it to his relatives in Taxas, US. On suspicion, the staffer informed chief postmaster Shaukat Masood who opened the parcel and found some packets of heroin weighing about 1kg in it. He was handed over to ANF.
